Willy Wonka color

Post by q1tv3 »

So I was flipping through the chanels the other day when I saw Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory(the old one), which I havent seen for YEARS! So I watched it and noticed how COLORFUL it was! {see examples below}

Then I watched many of the independant films on this site and others and noticed that ALOT of them had realy dull color (which is good in war movies). And its mostly because the majority of the short films are shot on a cheap camera.
If you want better color in your movie try boosting the saturation some. you may not think you have dull color but once you saturate it you will see the image come to life! Heres before and after pictures from a commercial i did for school.

you dont up saturation on DV footage because of the compression you end up getting bright pink and green blocks of artifacts all through your footage. you have to do some important processes to DV before you even think of color.

P.S I remember the flowers being black?

The opening scenes of The Wizard of Oz, when it takes place in Kansas, were shot in black and white. Then, when Dorthy lands in Oz the film transitions into colour, with the help of some incredible set/makeup work. It was far from the first colour film, though it was one of the first feature length live action colour films. And I agree with aaronv2, over saturated footage looks wierd and that's before the artifacts make their appearences in the render.

We cant up the saturation, we cantr paint in cells by hand etc etc so what is the answer to getting brighter colours in DV footage?

P.s. the pictures are great as they show a vast improvment, how id it work for you over the whole piece?

You can try to fix the artifacts first.

This Tutorial requires After Effects
Try playing with Hue/Saturation and up your saturation
Duplicate your layer
Do a fast blur to the top layer with the following settings: NTSC: horizontal only of four, PAL: Vertiacal and Horizontal of 2
set the top layers blending mode to color.

the secret is to the 4:2:2 sampling DV footage has you need to use plugins or use the samples to increase the "exposure" instead of trying to improove the pixel values.

DV NTSC is 4:1:1, DV PAL is 4:2:0 High quality video is 4:2:2. So in DV, there is always going to be 1/4 the chroma resolution to the luma.

You can up the satch just make sure you dont up it too much and up the contast at the same time, works for me, even though I like that dull saturated look, but I use mini dv and the colors dont need alot of upping as they are already pretty vibrant.
It really depends on what you want, upping the satch is fine, but then if the colours start to bleed or look weird, tinker with the contrast and brightness, even the hue slightly is you have to. Thats what I do and it all works great.

Final Cut Pro atomaticly takes care of that for me! Sometimes I still get those bloches and i just import it to Compressor (part of final cut) and compress it with a certian setting that gets rid of them. so its all good!

The clip from the pics came out great. no artifacts!
