I Need Names!

Post by q1tv3 »

Could you guys help me.

I need a name for one of my charactors.

It needs to sound like a 'follower' as apposed to a 'leader'

Try to make the names not sound like the person is a total whimp/nerd.

The person who submits the name I like best will earn a spot in the credits to my movie!

Go!

For my movies I like to make the powerful/leading characters names basic and short or have a ring to them so they are not easily forgotten, for the non-leading people I make them somewhat regular or a name that you can hear in your classroom.

POWER- John, Nate, Tony

FOLLOWER- Steve, Mike, Ricky, David

If you are giving a name to a character then I am assuming they have some form of role in the film? depending on the role and screen time will depend on how often you are going to hear their name, if its to plain you run the risk of viewrs mentaly switching off, to 'funky' and it might just soiund silly? Are you after surnames aswell or just christian names?

Rock Stone, Chiseled Hardstone, or Nathan Bricksworth.
or on a serious note
Nathan is good, or Logan, Jack, Peter etc.

How about Michael Kauffman.

I tend to use similar names to me, like of people I know or those that have influenced me in some way or another. Rather than arbitrary persons, I feel I can relate to the characters better then.

When I need a good name I just plop out ye olde phone book and look for unique names.
or pick up a magazine, book etc

agree with you there, I like to name according to type and the odd religious hint can be good but a name can come from anywhere really. for example Gideon Bane was just Bane as in 'the Bane of ssomeones life' which is appropriate for the character, and the Gideon came after I wanted him to have a unique full name and there, in the hotle beside the bed on a little table was the good book left bu the Gideons! so i got it all, slightly quirky, unique name that has a close reference to the character in question.

someone told me once there were formular for names, and how people reacted to them subconsciously it was a long time ago but one was 1:3 based on syllables, i.e

Jack (1) Na-pi-er (3) [Batman]

another was never pick a name that has equal single syllables i.e.

Jack (1) Straw (1) [politician] (apparently they are to short and the brain dismissis the name to quickly, or something like that?)

and the third was to have the first name 'heavier' than the second i.e.

Vin-cent (2) Price (1) [Actor]
Gid-e-on (3) Bane (1) [Fictional character]

Just scribble some down and see what you like the sound of.
Jack, Toby, Richard, Julien, Carl, Lucas, Martin, Frances, Vincent

but hey, this is just the best my brain can remember due to a hangover! what ever works for the you and your characters.
