I'm a MiniDV dumbarse!!!

Post by Ornsack »

I've been making films for a many-a-year now... But I'm about to go in to the world of Mini-DV.

I understand that you can just plug the camera in to my firewire port and just capture! Is this true? And do I need to get any DV codecs?

You shouldn't need any codecs at all.. Mini-DV is heaven when it comes to editing.. Plug-in, capture and go crazy!

Ive experienced some DV-codec problems on the win98 OS, but if you have win2k, Me or XP it should be no problem

I have Windows XP on one of my hard drives, but I rarely use it 'cus it wont recognise my sound card, and I can't install my analogue capture card on it (and they say XP is better for compatibility!).

I'll get a new sound card though if I have any problems, cheers...

Well screw the analogue capture card if you're getting mini-DV and firewire anyways! :) The sound card problem is problably just out-dated drivers or something... But what OS are you running now? 95/98?

98... No I can't screw my Analogue capture card! The thing cost me half the price of a Mini DV camera!!! Plus I still use it most days (I'm always sending MPEGs of old VHS footage to my mates :D)

Hahha allrighty then..

Well you see, I was going to play this movie I made for my uncles 40-year birthday. And it was going to be played from a laptop via a projector. Now, this fu**ing laptop runs win98. Usually not a problem, but when I tried to play my good old DV pal file from it, it just couldn't do it. And since I knew of no standard DV codecs to download I was stuck with showing it via my camera. So get a mate or someone to send you a small DV-avi file so you can check that everything is allright. I could even send you a small one

I know Quicktime MiniDV files work, but if you have a small AVI then that would be great if you could send one over!

And I'm not selling it, remember I still use it!

What about the one attached to the bottom of every single forum post? (Click on EMAIL :P)

Anyway thanks for the clip! It played fine, although capturing is being a pain. In Win98 it just loads when I plug the camera in and does nothing else... In WinXP it recognises the camera but the capture screen in Premiere is just black :(

And this is with the mini-dv camera?

Hmmm... Remember to select right format when starting a new project.. PAL instead of NTSC I guess.. Even though it doesn't matter when I capture footage.

Ok now I can capture images... But I can only get the sound through the mic port... Meaning I have to use firewire for images and analogue for sound! Argh! I remember this happening to a friend of mine once many years ago... Anyone know what the problem is?

It may be worth installing the latest Microsoft Mediaplayer software available from their site. Media player 9 is it?

There is also a codec pack available from their site as well I seem to remember.

My DV codec (in XP) seems to be called 'Microsoft DV'. Not sure where this codec came from but it was there before I got my camcorder.

Ah ok when I get my next student loan (which, might I add, is going on film making stuff and NOTHING ELSE!!!) I'll get a sound card that works with XP, and download the latest media player codecs and what not. :D

maybe you just need xp drivers for the card... what company makes it and what model is it? may be as simple as a new set of drivers
