Need help recreating the "Barry Lyndon" look.

Post by John Groshko »

Hi guys,

I need all the help/advice I can get in recreating the "Barry Lyndon" look for one of my film classes. For the assignment, basically, we have 3 hours to set up and shot a short dialogue scene between two actors, but we have to pick a film with a certain "unique" look to it... so my group and I decided to do Barry Lyndon since I still have all my props and costume from "1812" and it could probably be done 2 hours easy.

We plan to shoot solely by candle light with a Panasonic DVX100 with it's exposure set to full and with it's lens on the widest setting (if need be we may use some soft fill light in the background to illuminate the scene as well).

Afterwards, in post, I plan to do some colour correction in Final Cut and do some animated-masking work in Adobe AE to take the background out of focus to make it look like the film has a very narrow depth of field.

And presto! A short film that looks like Barry Lyndon! (I hope)

If any of you guys have any ideas how this look could be better achieved and/or if you think I'm doing things wrong, let me know. Any help appreciated.

Below is clip from the Barry Lyndon "Candle lit" scene that we are trying to achieve.

The reason it has a narrow depth of field is because they had to use a BIG lens to capture that much light. They probably had to find a film with the lowest ISO they could get their hands on, that doesn't have an excessively grainy appearance. Even with the DVX, you will not be able to get quite enough exposure... unless you have a shitload of candles!
