Yes, mother does support, and most of my family and friends. They buy and watch our films to help the group.

Yeah, they do. My mum more than my dad. Mum comes to all the nights my film gets shown and buys tickets to film festivals so she can show me what they should look like!

At first they thought I was crazy and said I should pursue a "real job", but now they act excited about it.

Plus they'll give me money for things like tofu for fake brains, materials for a steadicam, etc.

They support it as a hobby but definitely not as a career. i just did a paper for school on the job as a film editor.

After spending many thousands of dollars on getting a degree in film editing, the budding editor works for 4-10 years for free. During this time they learn from the pros, develop contacts/relationships, and work their way to a job. Then, for the first 5 years of actually getting a job, pay averages $18,000 a year. I could make more being a garbage truck driver, but hey -- It's my passion, I'm good at it, and love doing it: and that's what counts. So maybe I'll minor in it.

funny about wages. I know people who work on some large factory floors packing boxes etc who earn more than some of the suits in the office. Makes some people think hard about getting a degree

About money and job opportunities...next year I'll be heading off to college to major in film...I've talked to the profs and their placement rate is very high, they've got folks doing local TV, web page, set design in L.A., etc. I figure if I get started off anywhere after college, I don't need much money, just enough to live on and to fund my indie films as I try to break into the biz.

Peter Jackson started off as a photo engraver...Walt Disney struggled as an independent animator in a basement or something...I know we're not all Jacksons or Disneys but their stories at least are inspiring.

Just be sure to have a normal job nailed down for sure --- you'll need income while searching for that break into the business!

Yeah I agree, the film industry is hard to get into so you have to make sure you can make money some other way instead of just thinking you'll get in straight away.
But then again, it would be like that for every career. If you want to be a garbage man you'll have to at least be able to lift the bins and drive a truck or continue to do things like that and not be too scared to touch trash. That basically means you need qualifications for everything, no matter how horrible it is, and if you don't have them completely filled out, you will need to have something else to lean on.

My parents support me full heartedly.

Sometimes they're even the ones pushing me out the door to a shoot.

When it comes to getting a job as a film editer for a bit of filler you might want to look into working in the news industry. Thats what I am doing right now, and its part time and I make about $15,000 a year for it, though its part time work and cr** hours 3-7am. But hey I go to work and edit, its not creative to offten but its a start and you can use the skills.

It should be 'do your parents suppost you?' or 'does your mum support you?' tut! My parents didn't really know about it at first but as soon as they knew the full extent of my invovlment they were really supportive. Splashed over £160 this Xmas on editing software (and they bought me loads of other pressies, lucky me!). I'm hoping to persuade them to splash more on a good camera. Plus my dad helped me "edit" one of my guns and helped (I say helped, he made it!) my boom. They find courses for me to go on as well. It's really useful having supportive parents! Mind you, sometimes they get annoyed at the amount of time I spend slaving away at the computer screen. :D

My parents are great with it. My mum supports it. My dad supports it x10.

In fact when we were doing Naughty Soldiers he didn't just pay for the van rental, he built/painted/dressed the polystyrene fence (with him being the one allowed to drive through it in return)

Yeah my dad's probably our biggest fan thinking about it :)
