It's hard at first to motivate people to help you out. I basically started out with me and a friend, showed that film to friends, made another movie, showed that, so on. At this moment, if well planned, I can probably get 10-15 people help me out. The only problem is it's hard to get them all together at the same time (jobs, etc.).

In the world of amateur filmmaking, just find friends that share your passion for movie-making and ask them nicely.

Lol. Yeah. Hell depending on how far you wanna go you could find, maybe a local drama school (this is for actors and crew I suppose) and ask if anyone wants to get involved in a film infront or behind the Line. Leaflet your school / other schools. Offer a free lunch. :D

If you're using a crane you'll need a lot more. How about a clapperboard dude, if you're using one? Depending on the size of your film you may have a Head of Staff/Stagemanager who bosses everybody about and tells them where to go. ON a small movie though you can get away with one crew member (memories of me juggling boom, camera, tripod. recording stuff etc. flash into mind :D).

we havea cast and crew mixed together, there are very rare ocassions when a crew member isn't on screen

usually have about 4-5 people working on a short scene

1 camera operator
1 boom operator

1 2nd camera unit (occasionally, if i can get hold of one)
1 script supervisor

and

1 person to do everything else, which usually ends up being me

:D Lol. Also I thought of something, offer 20p/c (depending on your country) to anyone who helps you out/joins your crew. :D

In our case, filming The Thing From Gangly Deep, its just the actors we have on the location, my dad, and me to be camera operators, people to hold eyeline sticks, prop people on hand, and who ever else we need. We do not have specific jobs, we just double up as crew/cast/ and techies(well, just Martin does that one.), as we're all as good as each other at it, (apart from Mart, he's the best electronial guy I know, along with being a robot.)...(And me, I'm cr** at acting.) :)

But I suppose you can only do it like this, if you have no more than three people acting at one time. (which is the case with us, but not necesarily tailored this way.)

Howdy all! I'm new to this forum! Mmm...well, when trying to get a film crew together, you should always really talk up your project ideas, y'know, make it sound exciting!

I ussually get my crew together, as I have a group of trained and experienced guys on the wait for work, or I ask some of my pals who have done commercials and films themselves. its easy, getting friends and begging them is the worst way to go, dont ever do it. Get someone who is confident, experienced, intellegent, impressionable and creative.

All of 'my crew' are just friends I've met over the years at school, college and university.

It's weird, you kinda sieve your friends over the years until you find the perfect team. I wouldn't dream of using certain crew members we worked with on Naughty Soldiers these days, but then some I met on that film I regard as people I go to first these days.

One person you really need is a script supervisor, or, the person who follows the script for what has been filmed and what needs filming as well as taking notes on continuity for the next angle. It's a pretty important, but boring job. A lot of times you think you know your script by heart and then hours after you've finished filming you read the script and say, "We didn't film that!"

Yesterday I began devising a crew list of all the people I'm going to need for a short film I plan to film in April. I thought you'd might like to see...

Director: Obviously directs the film.
Writer: Obviously wrote the film.
Producer: The main sha-bang whose in charge and provides funds.
Director of Photography Creates the overall visual look of the film.
Production Designer In charge of the overall look of the film, including wardrobe, setting, ect. This will likely be the Director and DoP.
Camera Operator Obviously operates the camera.
Assistant Camera I put this because this person is going to act as my 1st and 2nd assistant camera. 1st assistant is in charge of keeping the camera focused which isn't necessarily a hassle, but it is when you are working on a moving shot that requires focus. 2nd assistant uses the clapper board, which we'll be using because it helps to log footage easier.
Gaffer/Grip Works with the DoP to move the lights around and get that feeling you need through lighting.
Script Supervisor Explained earlier.
Sound Recording Boom operator
