Flashback - fuzzy edges around video

Post by poonhead »

What's the best way to put a fuzzy frame around letterboxed footage to create that oh-so-cheesy flashback effect, in Premiere?

i dont think it could be done in premiere could it? - i stand to be corrected.

you'd need a program such as after effects - although you could export the timeline as a filmstrip - open in photoshop - then apply the effect there to each frame but it'd be very time consuming...

I would take a picture of the fuzzy edges with a green inside and just use the transparentcey settings in Premiere. So the video is inside and you have a really oh-so-cheesy flashback effect.

How would you do this effect with After Effects?

OK if you want to do this in premiere...
Put your clip on the "Video 2" track of premiere... And place another copy of your footage on "Video 1" track A roll or B roll it doesnt really matter... Next apply the "Guassian Blur Filter to the footage on "Video 1"

Next make a black and white image mask for fuzzy edges like this...
Image

Then back in premiere select Transparency for "Video 2" and then select "Image Matte" from the drop down box... Select your mask image and click ok... make your preview and the edges are fuzzy!

If you want to do this in after effects...
Make a new composition and import your footage... Place two layers of the same image one on top of the other in your composition...
Apply guassian blur filter to bottom layer...
To the top layer apply a "New Mask" (Right Click mouse on layer name goto mask and then "New Mask")
Ok now the mask outline (Rectangle) appears in the comp window... double click any of the points to select the whole mask shape... hold shift and scale the mask... not the footage... so you get a smaller rectangle then drag the outline back into the center youll notice that the footage is masked... All thats left to do now is adjust the mask feather to something like 150 and you are done.

So there you go it can be done in both premiere and AE... "Think outside the square..."

End communication.

EDIT: Spelling mistakes... how embarassing
