snowfall test- does this look like winter?

Post by camiziodeltoro »

this shot this summer, beginning of june. We covered half an acre of forest with chalk, and threw it ito the trees. The clothes of the actor where sprayed with spray on snow(the kind you use with christmas to spraypaint snowy drawings on your windows). The flake snow was later digitally added in 4 ayers, from a 3d program.

the question is: does it look like winter?

Looks like very light snow, youtube didn't help with the quality though.

Yeah, thats quite impressive. Also the blue colour grading set the mood, along with the exposed sky. Nice

I think the only giveaway is the fake snow, which is nearly spot on anyway!

I'd blur the snow that's close to the camera because a DV camera would never pick up fine drops in front of the camera like that

I'd also limit the snow to the odd flake as you're in the forest! Just a hint of a falling flake would do the job

But that would show the inconsistency of using a camera. Its like people who say that the motion blur looks bad in a certain film. In reality, there is no motion blur, if a car flies past you at high speed, you see the car whole, like photographers that complain about lens flares ruining a photo, general camera inconsitencies that are added in to films, yet we don't see them in real life. So basically if what your saying is, "a DV camera wouldn't pick up the fine drops" then maybe its good because then its not emphasising on what camera you are using but rather, giving it more realism, like the flake is right in front of you as if there is no camera

Alright then, ANY camera wouldn't pick up the fine drops ;)

There's a difference between cameras and eyes, and usually an effects artist would go about making effect shots look like they were shot in camera. Motion blur is applied to effect shots because cameras pick up motion blur (thanks to them working at a low fps compared to the eye which is constant). Lens flares are added to effect shots even though eyes don't get lens flares. And cameras wouldn't register small objects whizzing next to a camera lens very clearly.

Basically, people get weirded out when they see something un-natural. If people were watching footage of an ant walking across the lens of a camera as clear as day they'd be weirded out. If the ant was blurred they'd think "Look at that! There's an ant on the camera lens!"

I.e. you've got to simulate depth of field. No question.

Always, always, ALWAYS emulate what your camera's capable of in effect work!!

Plus even the human eye doesn't even focus on what's in front of your eye, rather than the object you're looking at, so......I'm really lost. Have I got the wrong end of the stick or am I making sense...?
