I'm using my digital (Photo) camera right now to do these, because my XL2 doesn't have the right kind of cable for computer transfer, and my comp doesn't have a firewire slot, so excuse the poor quality. These Are just tests.

Do they look like actual firearms to anybody?

I actually timed this one, heh :), it was only 7:00 minutes. I could take a little more time, but I' really used to doing that kind of muzzle flash, and getting the sound effects timned right never is too difficult.

Really? You've probably got better tools than I do. I'm doing this with Windows movie Maker and the Gimp. Nothin fancy.

Well, they don't look very real to me, and I've fired many real guns. Thing is though, you have to keep in mind the kind of resources we have. So, plastic guns are OK in my eyes. Also, the gun flashes they do in professional films often times look fake to experienced gun owners. I think your muzzle flashes look good, just not real, partly because real isn't as exciting as digital muzzle flashes.

Yeah, I almost never see the muzzle flash when I fire real guns. Just a puff of smoke or a little disturbance in the air. I'm just trying to imitate hollywood here.

Yeah, muzzles from most real guns with regular ammo looks pathetic, Hollywood-esque muzzles for the win :)

Looks good. What sort of transfer mode are you using on the muzzle flash itself? It looks like it could do with being a little more additive.

uhh... Lemme think, this was a while ago... I think I'm using additive over multiply. This is rotoscoping, not video editing, so I'm using the GImp, not After Effects.

Nice work. Now the trick is, can you pull that off in a sequence where there is action? :)

Oh yeah. It's easier in an action sequence. More attention is paid to everything that's going on, not just the gun fire. Besides, the sound is really what get's an audience to react.

You do realise that AE is a rotoscoping/compositing package, not an editing package?

If the GIMP has such a transfer mode, I'd use "add".

Also a nice little tip. If you ever fire LIVE rounds when it's little dark and you can actually see muzzle flashes, they have sparks come out of the end of the gun. You don't get those sparks when you shoot blanks. I think this is because of the projectile going down and scraping along the barrel. When you fire in the day, you normally can't see flashes . If you can they are usually dull orange, and tranparent. I've never fired live rounds at night, but with blanks, muzzle flashes are bright white and mostly opaque. Epsilon can confirm this as well. I don't know what live rounds look like at night. I think your methods look good, but I would put the sparks I talked about, and also put some more blur on the slide. Good work though. If it would help, I can try and film next time I go to the indoor range where you can see muzzle flashes, though I don't know if my camera can catch it. Hope this helps you out.

Yeah, I meant compositing, not editing. I just don't have anything that lets me edit more than one frame at a time, so I have to do some creative editing with this stuff just to make the kick not look completely retarded.

I tried to do the sparks with the first one, I guess they just don't show very well. This stuff is so much easier in Photoshop.

Alright, I'll try this again, and see If I do a better job this time around.

I typically use muzzle flash stock footage instead of painting in a flash. There are some cool ones with smoke and everything on detonationfilms.com that I use whenever I need to do something like this. I've always found slide movement to be irritating and time consuming however...
