Post by slimdog55 »

Canon is releasing the Optura 600 next month (Sometime in September) for a estimated selling price of $1,099.

It has a One 1/2.8 Inch CCD. It also says on the press release that it has "True 16:9 Widescreen Mode." I'm thinking this will someday be my next camcorder. Hopefully for Christmas.

1. What do you think about this camcorder?

2. Would you rather get this, or a Panasonic PV-GS400 which has 3 1/4.7 Inch CCD's?

3. Which would have better low light performance? The 3 small CCD's, or the big 1/2.8 inch CCD?

It (Canon Optura 600) also has a Mini Stereo Jack to connect microphones. I'm most likely going to get a "Stereo Mini Jack To XLR" wire so I can use shotgun microphones like the Sennheiser ME66. I can't wait until this camcorder is mine.

I was looking at the Optura 60 and the Optura Xi, wondering which was better, and I didn't even notice this camera! Looks like it has much better image quality than all of Canon's other cameras (other than the GL2 and XL2). Canon doesn't really have a good reputation for low light performance, but things can change. The Panasonic probably has better image quality and low light performance because of the larger lense.

I think I'd get the Panasonic just because it has a Manual focus ring and more manual control, plus it can take external lenses. Not a big fan of the "verticle" style camcorders either.
