Well it all depends on how much they cost in order to know if either are a good deal or not!

It depends on how much you are wiling to pay for it. Is it worth it? I don't know. Nobody does but yourself. Will you ever use it? I think the FX1 is nicer in picture than the PD170, as it is an older product. The FX1 is very new.

The PD 170 has better low light response than the FX1. Also the 170 has the XLRs on teh camera, doesn't need the beachtek for XLR audio decvices

Really? I thought my FX1 was really nice on the low light end. The Beachteks are nice too. You can find them for about $150 on eBay.

No but Sony's ratings show the PD with a lower LUX rating, and some indepensdent reviews ( b-roll.net had one) talk about better LL performance on the 170/2100 optics. As much as I like my SOny cams, the new Panny and JVC cams offer some great features, in cams sub $6000 MSRP ( probably 4k - 4.5k street price) like DVCPro HD as opposed to HDV. Keep in mind, HDV streams are highly compressed, useing MPeg2 compression technologies

Of course, if you have an HDTV. :P

Yeah, the Mpeg compression is the only bugger about it, in my opinion. I am probably going to use it more in DV mode and take full advantage of the full widescreen and cine-gamma correction. :D

Next on my hit list is a Sony DSR-400 or something in that family. Or into the lower end Panny DVCPro format. I would prefer to get something DVCPro50, but have to check compatibility witht he local TV stations for formats on Pro50. XL2 is as close as Cannon comes to producing a Pro camera, and it is still in the prosumer ranks. One of the reasons I avoid Cannon video, they don't produce a true Pro camera. JVC / Sony / Panny all produce broadcast level cameras, and I'm sure some of the technology they have developed for those cams in tape transport, format, Imaging systems has filtered down to the prosumer cams at least.

Welll, yeah, if I had a couple hundred K hanging around LOL.... I shoot mostly for television though so I tend to consider a clean video look as the most important.
