Could I use this insted of my Camera Mic

Hey. The Mic on my camera is in a horrible place, and so it picks up some of the internal camera noises. Its got a mic input on it, but would using this item (from ebay) be any better or worse?

While that would work you probably want to get a directional mic, like a shotgun mic or a boom mic, however anything is better than the internal mic.

If your camera has a shoe for accesories, you should get a shot gun mic. Most of them have 2 options, Tele (which picks up voices far away) or Close-Up. And, they pick up clean sound.

The mic would work, but there are much better options out there. Check out Azden's line of shotgun mics. They should have a model that fits within your budget. You may have to shell out a bit more cash, but the result will be well worth it.

You'd be much better of looking at something like these. These seem like pretty good mics for the price.

I have the specs on the $49.95 mic allthought they don't really mean a lot to me.

If somebody could tell me whether these specs are ok it would be much appreciated.

The spec sheet I found said the frequency range is only 100-16k Hz which is a bit limited. you should aim for something more like 50Hz to 22kHz covering more of the audible spectrum. Saying that the mic wont just stop working at the lower frequencies it will just be less sensative.

Who gives a sh1t? Hold it in your free hand, stick it in a mic stand, tape it to a helmet. Think about what you are suggesting here with that ridiculous little mic, seriously think about it....... the mic sits about 1-2 centimetres away from the camera, put your ear 1-2cm away from the camera. Can you hear the camera working? Exactly.

Why you would want to replace the quality mic on your camera with an inferior quality mic to record the SAME camera noises is beyond me. And to make matters worse the mic input is probably what..... on teh back of your camera? There's a reason the mic and Lens are in FRONT of the camera, it's so you can film what's in front of you. Basically with this mic you will be recording the video of whats happening in the front of you and the audio of whats happening to the close proximity of the back of you.

Get a directional shotgun mic, that way you can point it at whoever is talking and get a much better result then recording the camera noises and what is happening behind the camera with such a ridiculous little microphone, whether or not you have a hot-shoe is totally irelevant, you wouldn't need to use one anyway. The mount is just there as an option.

I bought a mini disc recorder off Ebay for 50 bucks and a wireless lapel mic for about $20, this gets a pretty good result recording audio as you can just clip it onto your shirt and the recording remians digital.

Im gonna take a stab soon at doing audio and video seperately.

Wow. Very good point. If, in fact, it does need phantom power, this could be a huge determining factor in whether or not this is a viable option. Phantom power aside, this is probably not the best mic to use in this situation.

I've used studio mics that worked without the required phantom power before. haha. It lost a lot in quality, though you could always try it. Most other microphones didn't work without the phantom power.
