Where to get a cheap boom mic?
hi, well, I've been saving up my money and I'm thinking of either getter the Canon Opture Xi or maybe even the GL-2 model, but whatever, what I need to know is where I could get a compatible boom mic for either of those models, if that matters, but also where I can find one for cheap.
Any ideas? Thanks for any replies.

Local camera store? Ebay? BNH has some pretty good stuff, dosn't mean it's cheap though. Search around, it's a lot easier then asking people scattered over the country/parts of england.

PVC baby, works awesome.
Then just make a shock mount from bungie to put the mic in and you are set. If you need some pictures or help let me know, I can upload some images of what I made.

I use an extension rod from teh Local home improvement stor designed to remove high lightbulbs. Small bungees or even large heavy duty rubber bands work wonders for the shock mount. What size PVC do you use, and how much flex does it have?ipon70 wrote:PVC baby, works awesome.

I always use a microphone stand and a shock mount. Looks professional and works just as well!

I tried 3/4 inch and didn't like it because of flex. So I am now using 1" and it works really good, no flex that you can tell. I then made the shock mount from 2 inch PVC and used thin bungy to put through it, then sprayed everything black so it looks all pro . You have to really shake the cr** out of it to get it to make noise now.
BTW for a cheap GOOD mic I would look at this one

Great deal for the money and picks up awesome.

I keep seeing that mic and keep thinking about it... My guess is that it is made cheap somewhere overseas and the sensory elements are probably variable in sensitivity. You don't get great mics cheap, but that one looks like something I might want to play with for quick location audio!
Do you have one!? Let's hear a review!

I don't think it would work with the ZR-60, that just has a 1/8 in. audio jack. I think the microphone iPon is talking about has a full microphone jack. You could always get an adapter, though.
The Sony, I do not know.
Personally, I just use a Shotgun mic. It can go on the camera, or on a boom, and it has a wind cover.

I havent looked at what the sony or cannon have, but it comes with an 1/8" and 1/4 adapter for the mic input. Also its mono, so if you are into picking up stereo you would have to use two. Personally when I start worring about that I will have the money to care..

Well after searching it looks like that mic is compatible with both of those camera's.
Here is a cool article on the difference between some of the higher end cameras.
