What's the point?

Ripping DVD material and converting to other formats (ie VCD).

What's the point?

Post by El Brenty »

What's the point of having regional settings on a DVD player, and having your DVD player locked if you change the setting more than a certain number of times, when you can just by-pass this by copying the files off a DVD onto your hard-drive and playing the video files from there???

EH???

Doesn't figure!

I didn't think you could copy the files straight off a DVD unless you used a program which breaks the CSS encryption?

Or you can use AnyDVD which lets you play any region DVD on your PC regardless of what your hardware or software is locked to.

I could be wrong, but I think that the whole crazy reason was behind money. I think they put that stupidity on there so you couldn't import the DVD from somewhere else, cheaper. I dunno, it's crazy.

Region encoding is blatently about price fixing. They claim it is due to language differences and variations in retail costs. So why is the UK in the same 'region' as Turkey, Japan and South Africa?

Region encoding sucks. Luckily all my DVD hardware thinks it sucks as well and tends to ignore it :)

Same here. I don't understand anyone who doesn't own a multi-region player...
