Ripping DVDs from standalone DVD player

Post by Anonymous »

Does anybody know if there is any way to rip DVD's where the source is a stand alone DVD player rather than the source being a DVD player in a computer?

I have a DVD player, and a CD Writer in my computer, but not a DVD player in my computer.

Thanks
Matt

In a word .. no :)

Ripping a DVD refers to the process of extracting the information from the disc digitally and then re-encoding or recording on another medium.

The best you could do with a standalone DVD player is output from the analogue connectors and capture using a video capture card or a normal VCR.

However, most DVD players have a system called Macrovision that would prevent this sort of copying. Macrovision can be turned off on some modified players.

Basically if you want to convert to VideoCD the only sensible way to do it is via a PC with a DVDROM and CDwriter.

Ripping With A Standalone DVD

Post by dsnynut25 »

I have sucessfully ripped or copied a dvd onto a VHS videotape with the use of a standalone DVD player. My dad has this old little black box that was used to take the copyright off of VHS tapes so you could copy them. We used this, along with some input/output cables to transfer DVD video from the tv to VHS. After we hooked up the cables, we simply turned on the DVD and pressed record on the VCR. It worked perfectly. The movies that i ripped were: THE GLASS HOUSE, RAT RACE, SPARTACUS, AND THE SOPRANOS. Im not sure where you can buy the black box, but you can check at any electronics store.

I think you'll find thats just so you can record over the tape!!! :D

Anyway recording a DVD to a video tape is a bit pointless, just buy the DVD & have that great quality...:) Or copy the DVD to a DVD-R disc ;)
