Rent some mafia movies, have a look at the storylines in them, then modernise it. Even if there aren't any stories which you like they may inspire you.

If you really wont to harvest the mafia feeling on film you first need to understand that the mafia was not all about shooting and murdering it was about family, popularity respect and always coming out on top. First thing you need to do is study real "Mobsters" such as Al Capone, Lucky Luciano and modern day mobsters like John Gotti. Then read stories not just about the mafia but crime in general. Then finally watch and study these movies:

The Godfather 1: one of my all time fav. Movies
The Godfather 2: also one of my fav.
The Godfather 3: not as good as the first two, but it is still a very good film and it is actually about the modern mafia.

Goodfellas: very good film about the modern mafia.

Scarface: although this film is in no respect about the mafia, it is still a good way to find out about the violent side of the job in the modern world Very good film.

The Sopranos: this is not a film but a TV show that appeared on HBO that is all about the mafia of 2000 however it has a grate deal of Violence sex and a hole lot of profanity and I’m steel not allowed to watch the show if you are between the age of 8-17 I suggest you just leave this show alone.

I hope this has helped you. (This is article I think is pretty good on the cont of me the writer isn’t even Italian.

Don't forget to watch some mordern day ganster films too. Films like "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking barrels" and "snatch" may be quite good for story ideas. I know that they aren't really about the the Mafia and are technically comic movies, but there should be some good stuff in there.
