Got a few minutes to spare?

Post by Despin »

Hey there.

I haven't posted anything on here for a while. I started a new script this morning. I thought I would post the first ten pages. See what you guys think.

I'll be honest. I have no real idea where this script is going. I'm just gonna post pages as I write them.

If anyone is interested and wants to read as I go it would be great to hear some feedback. What's working for ya and what isnt kind of thing.

Anyway. Here's the first ten.

Code: Select all

OVER BLACK

Clicking sounds as a spring powered device is wound up.

The clicking stops and a gentle music box type tune starts
               to play.

               CLOSE ON: ROTATING FIGURINE

Hand made from different bits and pieces. Copper wire,
springs, cogs, small pieces of scrap metal.

Despite it's raw materials, it manages to project an
elegant beauty as it "dances" in warm amber light of a --

EXT. CITY BACK STREET - NIGHT

-- City street light. One of many, it casts amber light
across an empty street of small shop fronts and down into
the low window of a --

               INT. BASEMENT WORKSHOP - SAME

Situated below the shop above. It's completely dark except
               for the street light.

The figurine sits on a workbench full of small hand tools
and pieces of old mechanical devices.

On the wall behind the bench, hangs several old clocks.

A shadow moves. The room is not as empty as we may first
               have thought.

The dancing figurine starts to slow down. The music that
plays along with it also slows.

A dark figure steps forward, takes the figurine and leaves
the room. The door swings shut slowly behind it.

We hear heavy footsteps on stairs, footsteps above us,
another door opens and a bell rings.

               Then silence.

Someone walks past the basement window outside up on the
               street.

               TIME CUT TO --

               INT. BASEMENT WORKSHOP - MORNING

Still on the basement window, bright shafts of morning
               sunlight illuminate the room.

A new set of feet walk past the window.

EXT. CITY BACK STREET - SAME

The feet belong to FREDRICK BAKER late 50's. He carries a
bag in one hand and a folded newspaper in the other,
               reading as he walks.

He reaches the front door of a shop, takes a set of keys
from his pocket and lets himself in.

The sign on the shop window reads --

FREDRICK BAKERS ANTIQUITIES - BUY, SELL, TRADE AND REPAIR

               INT. BAKERS ANTIQUITIES - CONTINUOUS

Fredrick puts the bag down, turns and then stops. He looks
               down to the floor.

MUDDY FOOTPRINTS lead across the room and to a nearby door
               that's marked WORKSHOP.

               He shakes his head.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Tut tut tut. Not again.

He walks away from the footprints and into the --

               BACK ROOM

He puts the kettle on, looks at his newspaper and picks up
               the phone. Dials and waits.

                                   FREDRICK
                             (into phone)
                         Hello Micky. Fredrick here. I
                         would like to place a...
                             (beat)
Oh but.. I know I.. Look I know
what I owe you... I'm just in a
little bit of a hole at the
moment. But I will be straight
again by the end of the month.
                         It's been a little slow that's
                         all...
                             (beat)
                         Well OK.
                             (smiles and looks back
                              to the paper)
Two hundred on the 11:15 at
                         Doncaster... "HEAVENS FATE". Yes.
                         That's all. Thank you.

He puts the phone down, smiles. The smile fades, he walks
               over to a broom cupboard.

               EXT. BAKERS ANTIQUITIES

A young women walks past Bakers and heads down the street.
In her mid 20's, pretty with a determined face. Her name is
               SOPHIE.

               EXT. STREET

She crosses the road and chats for a moment to a local
postman. She takes some mail and goes to the front door of
               a nearby CAFE/COFFEE SHOP.

The sign above the window reads --

               SOPHIE'S PLACE

She stops and looks down at her feet. A small figurine has
been placed at the base of the door. She looks at it.
Shakes her head, picks it up and goes inside.

               INT. SOPHIE'S PLACE - CONTINUOUS

Sophie's place is a small rustic looking coffee shop. About
seven small tables and a shop counter at the end of the
               room.

She comes inside and sets up for the day.

-- Fills coffee machine with coffee, turns them on.

               -- Tops up sugar pots.

-- Switches on fridge lights, fresh pastries and cakes look
               out from within.

Finally she puts some small change into the till. Hits a
button and it rings. She smiles, ready for the day.

INT. BAKERS ANTIQUITIES - FRONT OF SHOP

Fredrick uses a mop and bucket and finishes up cleaning the
               muddy footprints.

Finished, he puts the mop down and heads over to the
               WORKSHOP door.

               INT. BASEMENT WORKSHOP

Fredrick stomps down the steps leading to the main workshop
area. The same room we saw before. He spots a clock that
hangs on the wall, walks over to it, inspecting it. It
               works perfectly .

He turns and heads to a door at he rear of the workshop.

               Knocks hard.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Edward! EDWARD!!!

               Muffled groaning comes from within.

                                   FREDRICK
Edward!! Are you awake in there?
                         We must speak immediately.

More muffled groaning now followed by some sounds of
               movement.

                                   FREDRICK
Edward you were out last night. I
know you were. I thought we had
an agreement Edward? I kept my
side of the bargain. I expected
                         you to keep yours...

Above him a bell rings. Someone's entered the shop.

                                   FREDRICK
                         We'll talk about this later
                         Edward.

               Fredrick turns and heads upstairs.

CLOSE ON: DOOR HANDLE as it begins to turn.

INT. BAKERS ANTIQUITIES - FRONT OF SHOP

Fredrick comes up from the basement to find SOPHIE stood in
the shop. She carries a cup of coffee and looks around. She
               spots Fredrick, smiles.

                                   SOPHIE
Oh.. Hello. My name is Sophie, I
erm.. I opened a few weeks back.
                         Sophie's Place?

               Fredrick nods recognition.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Fredrick Baker.

He reaches out to shake hands. She changes the hand that
               holds the coffee. Shakes.

                                   SOPHIE
                         Well I've been gradually trying
                         to introduce myself to the
                         "neighbors" so to speak. Here.

               Holds of cup of coffee.

                                   SOPHIE
I brought you this. Hope you like
                         coffee.

She hands it over, he takes the coffee.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Well.. Thank you.

                                   SOPHIE
I wasn't sure how you liked it.

She fumbles in her pockets, pulls out a few small packets
of sugar and a small plastic tub of milk.

                                   SOPHIE
                         I always come prepared.

                                   FREDRICK
                             (holding up his hand)
                         Oh no. Black's fine. Really.

               P.O.V - SOMETHING BEHIND DOOR

Through a crack in the door someone watches Sophie and
               Fredrick talk.

               BACK TO SCENE

                                   SOPHIE
So how long have you been here?

                                   FREDRICK
Oh.. Let me think. Almost thirty
                         years now.

                                   SOPHIE
Wow. And you run the place by
                         yourself?

                                   FREDRICK
                         Erm... Well yes.

Behind them both the workshop door creeks as it closes. The
               pair spin to look.

                                   FREDRICK
                         These old buildings... They have
                         a mind of their own.
                             (beat)
                         Was there anything else you
                         wanted to ask me?

                                   SOPHIE
                         I'm sorry.
                             (embarrassed)
I'm prying. I'm not usually this
                         nosey.. Honest. It's just hard
being the new face around town,
                         you know?

                                   FREDRICK
                         Well actually I don't.

                                   SOPHIE
                         Of course..
                             (beat)
Well. Please feel welcome to come
                         over at anytime.

                                   FREDRICK
                         I'll keep that in mind.

               Sophie heads for the door.

                                   SOPHIE
Nice to meet you Mr. Baker.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Fredrick's fine. Really.

                                   SOPHIE
                             (nodding)
                         Fredrick.
                             (pointing to her shop)
                         Any time remember.

                                   FREDRICK
                             (nodding)
                         Anytime.

Sophie turns, opens the door, the bell rings and she
               leaves.

The second she's gone Fredrick turns to the workshop door
               and heads right for it.

               INT. BASEMENT WORKSHOP

P.O.V of someone in the basement looking up through the
small window onto the street. They watch as Sophie makes
her way across to her own shop and then disappears inside.

               INT. BASEMENT WORKSHOP

Fredrick rushes downstairs and into the workshop.

Fredrick stops, talks to someone O.C.

                                   FREDRICK
Just what has gotten into you
                         Edward? Sneaking out at night?
Taking risks when people are in
the shop. This is very unlike
                         you.

               We see what Fredrick sees.

The same workshop as before but now someone sits at the
workbench. A huge hulking figure. We see the figure from
               behind as Fredrick talks.

                                   FREDRICK
                             (softer)
                         Look Edward.. We know what
happens when you go out. When
people see you... You stay down
here for your own protection. I
made a promise to your mother and
when you go wondering off at
night you're forcing me to break
                         that promise.
                             (long beat)
Edward? Promise me you wont go
out again? At least until winter.
It gets dark earlier. The nights
                         are longer.

Fredrick waits, expects an a reply.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Edward?

The hulking figure, Edward, slowly turn to face Fredrick.

               WE SEE HIM.

Edward is badly deformed. His face a jagged mess of
abnormal bone structure. About 25 years old with pale white
               skin and diamond blue eyes.

                                   EDWARD
                         OK.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Thank you.
                             (beat)
I see you finished the DELVINCHI.

               He nods.

                                   EDWARD
                         The Matheson's Dortchestor will
                         be ready later today.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Oh good.

Edward turns back to the workbench. Fredrick walks over.
               Looks over his shoulder.

Edward is repairing an impossibly old cuckoo clock. Despite
his huge frame Edwards hands are incredibly delicate with
the fine workings of the machine.

He works cogs and springs. Piecing them together and
               constructing a working clock mechanism.

                                   FREDRICK
Your talent never ceases to amaze
me Edward. You work ten times
                         faster then I ever could.

Edward takes a final piece, fixes it into place and then
mounts the mechanism onto the main body if the clock.

He takes a key from a chain around his neck and winds the
               clock spring.

               The clock springs into life.

Fredrick beams with joy, runs his hands over the clock
               face.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Amazing.
                             (beat)
Where do you go at night?

Edward clears the workbench. Takes little pieces of scrap
metal, a broken cog, a spring. He collects them all up and
puts them in a small wooden box.

                                   EDWARD
                         Nowhere.. I just walk.

Fredrick looks at his watch end then up to one of the many
clocks on the wall, adjusts the time.

                                   FREDRICK
Well I have to get back to the
                         shop.

               Edward nods.

                                   FREDRICK
I'm sorry it has to be like this
                         Edward.

                                   EDWARD
                         It's not your fault.

               INT. SOPHIE'S PLACE

SHARON 20's feisty pours a cup of coffee and carries it
               over to a customer.

                                   SHARON
There you go. One black with
                         sugar.

She turns and heads back to the counter where Sophie sits
               and goes through some paperwork.

Sharon reaches behind the counter and pulls out a Figurine.

                                   SHARON
                         How many is this?

                                   SOPHIE
                         Three.

Sharon holds it up to the light, inspects it.

                                   SHARON
                         Three?
                             (beat)
                         I think they're creepy.

                                   SOPHIE
                         I kinda' like em.

                                   SHARON
                         You're crazy.

                                   SOPHIE
                             (jokingly)
                         Maybe I am.

Sophie stands and goes behind the counter. She reaches up
to a shelf and removes a few ceramic ornaments.

She reaches under the counter and takes two of the
figurines. Places them on the shelf.

                                   SHARON
                         You're kidding right?

                                   SOPHIE
                         Pass it here.

She reaches out. Sharon passes her the figurine. She places
it on the shelf next to the first two.

                                   SHARON
                         So who's leaving them?

                                   SOPHIE
                         I have no idea.

                                   SHARON
                         A secret admirer?

                                   SOPHIE
                         I said I don't know.

                                   SHARON
                             (whispering)
                         Maybe it's someone in here.

She looks around the shop. About five people sit and drink
               coffee, read papers.

               Sophie looks around.

                                   SOPHIE
                         Could be.

I like it. It's not immediately obvious whether his is going to be a horror flick or a tender, improbable romance, but whichever way you take it, I'd like to see the finished result.

Hey there.

Thanks for taking the time to read. For those who are intrested, here are th next ten pages.

Code: Select all

  SOPHIE
                         Could be.

An uptight looking man in a grey suit sits by the door. He
reads from an immaculately folded newspaper.

                                   SHARON
                             (joking)
You see, I always suspected Mr.
                         Beech was the creative type.

Sophie laughs a little too loud. Everyone in the room looks
over to them. They giggle quietly.

               INT. BAKERS ANTIQUITIES - LATER

Fredrick sits at the counter and listens to a small
portable FM radio. A horse race. He listens. Excited.

               BASEMENT WORKSHOP - CONTINUOUS

Edward sits at his workbench. He hears the radio in the
               room above. Shakes his head.

               BAKERS ANTIQUITIES - CONTINUOUS

The race comes to an end... Fredrick smashes his hand onto
the radio, turning it of. He hits it too hard and it falls
               off the counter and smashes.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Damn it...

               He didn't win.

He reaches for his newspaper. Turns to the sports page.
               Picks up a phone. Dials.

                                   FREDRICK
                             (into phone)
                         Hello. Yes. Erm.. Yes it's
Fredrick again. Yes I am fully
aware that it... Look I know
that... I would just like to..
                         What??? But that's ridiculous. I
                         refuse to pay. This is
                         preposterous.
                             (suddenly gets very
                              nervous)
                         You can't threaten me.
                             (a little braver)
Really? Well you just try that.
You wont get a penny out of me...
Yes. That is a fact. And further
                         more...
                             (beat)
                         Hello... Hello?

               The line's dead.

He slowly lowers the phone, takes out a hanky and wipes the
               sweat from his brow.

He gets his composure back and walks from behind the
counter an over to the WORKSHOP door. He opens it slightly.

                                   FREDRICK
                             (shouting downstairs)
Edward I'm going to fetch you're
                         groceries. I'll be back later.

               INT. BASEMENT WORKSHOP - SAME

Edward is sits at his workbench. He has a pair of pliers in
hand and gently twists and bends a piece of broken spring.

He looks up as he hears Fredricks footsteps in the room
above and then sound of a bell ringing as the front door
               opens and closes.

Edward gets to his feet and walks over to the small window
that looks up and out into the street above. He takes a box
               and stands on it.

He sees Fredrick walk a little down the street and stop at
a SMALL RED CAR. He takes out a key and gets in. A second
later he drives off down the street.

He looks down the street towards Sophie's Place.

               EXT. SOPHIE'S PLACE

Sophie stands out front of the cafe and smokes a cigarette.
She looks over to Bakers shop. She sees something. Looks
               more intently.

               INT. BASEMENT WORKSHOP

Edward reacts. Did she see him? He falls backwards off the
               box, hits the floor hard.

               INT. SUPER MARKET - LATER

Fredrick carries a half full basket of groceries.

               EXT. SUPER MARKET - CARPARK

Fredrick sits in his car. People walks past, going home
               with their own shopping.

               INT. FREDRICK'S CAR

Fredrick leans to the back seat of his car and roots
through one of the shopping bags. He finds something, Pulls
               it out.

A LARGE JAR OF PEANUT BUTTER

He opens the jar and puts it in his lap. He reaches into
his inside pocket and pulls out a small vile of clear
               liquid.

He opens the vile and pours all of the liquid into the jar
of peanut butter. He replaces the lid and gives it a shake.

He puts the jar on the passenger seat and starts the car.

               INT. SOPHIE'S PLACE - LATER

It's early evening. Two men sit the corner and a young
women with two kids sit by the window.

Sophie wipes down the shop counter, Sharon sits at a table
with a newspaper. She looks at the crossword.

                                   SHARON
                             (reading crossword clue)
OK Sophie, Four down. "Being one
                         of an incomplete set?"

Before Sophie has time to answer the door opens and a young
man walks in. He carries an impossibly huge bunch of DEEP
RED roses and a box of chocolates. His name is IAN.

Sophie looks up, sees him. She rushes from behind the
counter and tries to lead him out.

                                   SOPHIE
No, no, no, no, no. Ian I told
you I don't want to see you in
                         here anymore.

                                   IAN
Just listen to what I have to
                         say. I think I can..

                                   SOPHIE
Nope. Get out. Now. We finished
                         three months ago.

Sharon is now up on her feet.

                                   SHARON
Ian this isn't right. Not here.

                                   IAN
Shut up Sharon. This has nothing
                         to do with you.
                             (to Sophie)
If you could just listen to
                         wha...

By the window the women gets to her feet. Leaves some
change on the table and grabs her kids. She ushers them
               quickly out of the door.

                                   SOPHIE
                             (angry now)
Ian get out. Now. We're finished.
I don't want to see you any more.

                                   IAN
You can't do this to me.

Losing his temper, he throws the flowers to the floor.

                                   IAN
I'm not going anywhere until you
listen to what I have to say.

                                   SHARON
                         That's it. I'm calling the
                         police.

                                   VOICE (O.C.)
                         There's no need for that.

One of the two men that were sitting in the corner of the
cafe has come over to help. About 30 years old. We'll call
               him CLEGG.

                                   CLEGG
                             (to Ian)
                         You. Out the of here.
                             (points to the door)
                         Now.

                                   IAN
What? Who the hell are you?

Clegg doesn't answer. He reaches out, grabs Ian by his
shirt and kicks his legs out room under him. Ian falls
backwards as Clegg drags him out of the cafe.

               EXT. SOPHIE'S PLACE

The doors burst open and CLEGG drops Ian onto the street
               outside.

                                   CLEGG
Do yourself a favour. Get the
                         hell out of here.

Ian scrabbles to his feet n starts backing off.

                                   IAN
                         You've made a big mistake
touching me like that. A big damn
                         mistake.

Clegg pays no mind. Turns and heads back into..

               SOPHIE'S PLACE

Sophie and Sharon are picking up the flowers from the
floor. Clegg comes over and starts to help.

                                   SOPHIE
No.. Please. Sit down. Let me
bring you a drink over. I owe you
                         that at least.

He gives an "if you insist" look and goes back to his
table, where the second man still sits. He didn't even
attempt to get up. He rolls his eyes as Clegg takes a seat.
               His name is MARCUS.

                                   MARCUS
You just love playing Mr. Nice
                         Guy don't you?

                                   CLEGG
Hey, give me a break. Helps me
                         sleep at night.

               INT. BAKERS ANTIQUITIES

Fredrick lets himself inside the store. He carries the
               groceries in two plastic bags.

He walks past the counter to find a cardboard box with a
               small note. It reads.

               The Matheson's Dortchestor. DONE.

               Fredrick nods as he reads.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Good boy.

               INT. BASEMENT WORKSHOP - CONTINUOUS

Fredrick comes inside and makes his way downstairs.

                                   FREDRICK
                             (joking)
                         Edward? You decent?

He comes into the workshop. Edward is away from the
workbench now and sits in a chair by a small dim lamp. He
               reads a paperback book.

                                   FREDRICK
Here you go Edward. I got you
                         you're things for the weekend.

He places the carrier bags onto the workbench.

                                   FREDRICK
And look what I found they had
                         back in store.

He reaches into one of the bags and pulls out the peanut
               butter.

                                   FREDRICK
                         Your favorite.

He throws the peanut butter to Edward. He catches.

                                   EDWARD
                         Thank you.

                                   FREDRICK
                         You're quite welcome.

               Turning to go back upstairs.

                                   FREDRICK
I must go and contact the
                         Mathesons.

               INT. SOPHIE'S PLACE - LATER

The Clegg and Marcus still sit and drink their coffee.

Sophie comes over to their table.

                                   SOPHIE
So can I get you guys a re-fill?

                                   CLEGG
                         No. Thanks. We've had enough.
                         Thanks anyway.

                                   SOPHIE
Well, thank you.. I don;t know if
we would ever had gotten rid of
                         him had you not...

                                   CLEGG
                         That's quite alright.

               An awkward moment.

                                   SOPHIE
Well.. If.. If I can get you guys
anything you just give me a
                         shout. OK?

Sophie turns and goes back to the counter.

               Marcus looks at his watch.

                                   MARCUS
Come on. It's getting late. Let's
                         get this done.

Clegg nods and drinks the last of his coffee. Let's go.

Marcus heads for the door. Clegg goes over to Sophie by the
               counter.

                                   CLEGG
                         What do we owe you?

                                   SOPHIE
                         Please. It's on the house.

                                   CLEGG
Nope. I insist. He puts some
money on the counter. That should
                         cover it.

                                   SOPHIE
Erm.. Ok then. Well thanks again.

                                   CLEGG
                         You;re welcome.

               Clegg turns, leaves.

               Sharon comes over.

                                   SHARON
I like him. You should have got
                         his number.

               EXT. SOPHIE'S PLACE

Clegg comes outside, joins Marcus and the pair of them
cross the road. Walk a little and head right into --

               INT. BAKERS ANTIQUITIES

Fredrick is stood behind the counter and talks into the
               phone.

The door bell rings but before he has the chance to turn
               and see who is it.

               BOOM!

Clegg has ripped the phone from his hands and smashed it
across his face. The old man flies back into some shelf
               space.

               BASEMENT WORKSHOP - SAME

Edward reacts to the commotion in the room above. Rushes to
               the stairs.

               BAKERS ANTIQUITIES - SAME

Fredrick is on the floor, Clegg stand over him. Marcus
stands by the door keeping watch.

Clegg is like a different man. Menacing.

                                   CLEGG
Who the do you think you are
talking to talk to Mr. Donnely
like that? Do you think he is
playing a game? This is real Mr.
Baker. This is as real as it
gets. When you tell Mr. Donnely
you're not going to pay him what
you owe, he gets upset. And when
he gets upset, people get hurt.
Right now Mr. Baker, you, are
                         "people".

Clegg lashes out and kicks Baker hard in the stomach. He
turns to look around the shop. He sees the box sitting on
the counter and picks it up. Gives it a shake.

               Fredrick reacts.

                                   FREDRICK
                         No.

               Clegg smiles.

                                   CLEGG
                         This expensive?

He opens the box and takes out the clock.

                                   CLEGG
Don't know what people see in
                         these things myself.
                             (beat)
But it takes all sorts doesn't
                         it?

He throws the clock violently at the wall. It explodes into
               a million pieces.

A small cog from inside the clock rolls along the floor. It
travels the length of the shop until it comes to a stop
               right outside the workshop door.

The door is slightly ajar. Edward stands there watching. He
slowly reaches his hand out and takes the cog.

               BACK TO SCENE

CLEGG reaches down and drags Fredrick to his feet.

                                   CLEGG
So here's what we're going to do.
We're gonna to leave and you're
                         gonna call Mr. Donnely and
apologies and tell him how sorry
you are and how you're going to
                         pay him back with interest.
Twenty five percent should do it.
We're not greedy. We just want
                         what's owed. You with me?

               Fredrick nods frantically.

                                   FREDRICK
Yes, yes, of course. Please tell
                         Mr..

                                   CLEGG
                             (interrupting)
                         Nope... You tell him yourself.

Clegg lets go of Fredrick and turns to leave.

               Fredrick follows them out.

                                   FREDRICK
                             (still frightened.)
Yes of course. I'm very sorry
                         about this..

Clegg joins Marcus as he leaves the shop. Fredrick follows
               them out.

               EXT. BAKERS ANTIQUITIES

The two men leave without looking back. They cross the
street to where a car is parked. Marcus takes out some keys
and gets inside. Clegg gets in the passenger side.

Fredrick comes out of his shop, watches them leave.

He takes a hanky out of his pocket and wipes the sweat from
his brow. He winces. Holds his side in pain and drops the
hanky. It falls out into the street. He takes a step out,
leans down to get it when.

               BOOM!

He walks right into the path of an on coming truck. He has
               no chance.

               A bystander screams.

Two other cars screech to a halt.

Sophie comes running out of her shop. Sees the accident
               scene.

                                   SOPHIE
                         Oh my god!

               She shouts back inside.

                                   SOPHIE
                         Call an ambulance. Sharon quick.
                         There's been an accident.

She rushes over to where a small crowd is already gathered.
Fredrick lays dead in the road.

She looks around and up at bakers shop. Inside she sees
something. Barely. It's Edward. He stands inside the store
               behind the main window.

When she looks back. He's gone.
Despin out.
