Okay....
I just got a Qwest DSL modem and I was wondering how to hook up to Xbox live. Should I go wireless or try running an ethernet cable 20 feet? I have a Mac too, so would that be a problem? Quick help appreciated, thanks.

Shouldnt be a problem. DO NOT go wireless....bad idea. Run the cable 20 feet. Mac's shouldnt have a problem....put DHCP on inside of your modem (if u dont know how to do that, look in your manual)...basically created internal IP addresses such as 192.168.1.100 - 255 ... your xbox should choose a number and should be set to connect, as well as your Mac. So it's all good. Any more problems post em. I hate routers though.

i tried wireless, i had my cousin come over, and mind u this was with the wireless xbox thing directly from xbox....so he hooked it to my router...hooked up 2 tv's...You could visably see a latency problem, (halo 2) like i'de move...3 seconds later ide move on his screen. It was bad. lol

Thanks, I thought for sure to go wireless, Microsoft sure plugged it on their site. Anyways, It will take a while to get a router, since my modem only has one ethernet port, so I'm going to disconnect it from my computer and try a direct connection, because I really want to get on Live. But, my parents are worried it will screw up the dsl on the computer...Will it? Also, I'll be disconnecting the modem, so will that ruin anything?
OK...get a router..u can plug the computer and xbox into the router, will split the connection, everyone's modem only has 1 ethernet port.

Yeah, They try to get you to purchase the wireless set up, then p*** on you once you hook it up and find out it fails you horribly. Then you have to go wired, which can be painful if the xbox is in a different room than the router. (like mine) 
Truggy's right, every modem (or radio) has only one ethernet port. And that should have no effect on how soon you're able to get a router. If you're going to plug that main line from your modem into the xbox for Live, then you shouldn't have any problems. But you won't be able to have internet on the computer simultaneously, unless you have a router. It just acts as a "Y" for the most part, giving you two cables to work with instead of one. That way both your xbox and computer have access.
EDIT: I just drew this diagram up incase you needed help with setting it all up, or as a reference to how it all works.

just make sure u get a router and not a hub. Hub's dont redistribute IP address's locally...lol, i made that mistake and was out $25.

Lol, I like the diagram. Ok, I decided torun an ethernet cable through my ceiling, and over to my Xbox. I'm going to skip the router, and just connect, and disconnect every time. It's not the fastest DSL so, wouldn't using the Xbox and comp. with both on the internet, make them laggy? Both of them slow? All of this stuff and extra $$$ for stuff is worth it, Xbox Live is awesome. Thanks for the help, and if there's an absolute reason to get a router post it please, thanks.

I highly reccomend getting a router. It's so much more conveinent than the set up you've got. Trust me, you will get tired of having to go switch it all the time. Here is an ideal router, (D-Link 604) which is the same router I have. It's also going to allow you to have multiple computers hooked up to the net if you desire in the future. It's a good investment if you think you're interested.
