Do you mean editing?

Editing:
Final Cut Pro (Macs Commonly) -->Some Colleges Use [In the U.S.]
Avid (Windows & Mac) --> Most Colleges Use [In the U.S.]
Adobe Premier (Windows & I'm sure prob Mac as well)
Vegas Video (Windows, Version 5 by Sony, Version 4 By Sonic Foundry)

Special Effects:
Adobe After Effects
-
I don't use anything else

3d Animation:
Maya
3Ds Studio Max

--------------
Their is other cheap cr** out there
Pinnacle Studio (For editing)
and a whole bunch of other cr**.

I suggest MAGIX Movie Editor 2005, especially but not only for beginners. I use it myself too. It's cheap, powerful and easy.

If you can get iMovie, that's a good editing program. Final Cut Express is even better.

I like iMovie, that's what we use at school, but I tend to use Adobe Premiere.

Yeah, iMovies actually very capable for something that comes standard on every new Mac. It comes with a whole suite, too (iDVD, GarageBand, etc.)

But I use Final Cut Express, can do much more.

This is all, of course, if your using a Macintosh.

I like Windows Movie Maker way better than iMovie. I have them both. Windows can do a whole lot more, and is a lot easier. But I dont use either of them....
Get Adobe Premiere, or Final Cut, they're both pretty good, but I like Premiere better.

My friend uses Movie Maker 2, he loves it. I think it's a quicker workflow. Smoother Slow Motions, too. Final Cut Express does these incredibly smooth slo-mos, like you filmed it with a super fast camera.

If you have a mac get iLife. You get a whole bunch of programs like Clarence said. Garageband is an easy way to make a song for your movies. iMovie isn't as good as Premeire or Final Cut, but I prefer iMovie over Windows Movie Maker. Final Cut Express I think is available for download.

I use Vegas 5, it's really good. If you are going to buy it go Ebay, I bought it brand new and never used for $250 dollars, where at Sony's website it'll cost about $500 - 600 dollars.
