How Fast is your Internet Connection really?

Post by El Brenty »

Take the test here:

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

Here's my results:

Actual Speed
Downstream 458 Kbps (57.3 KB/sec)
Upstream 245 Kbps (30.6 KB/sec)

True Speed (estimated)
Downstream 494 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 264 Kbps (inc. overheads)

That's with Eclipse Internet on a 50:1 contention ratio, using a standard 512K ADSL connection!

WOW Twabi, what are you running for that? Although your upsteam speed seems a bit on the slow side, so uploading onto the internet would take longer in your case.

The difference could have been affected by your contention status. When you have a ADSL line, you're actually sharing it with other people. Typically, you share with either 20 or 50 people. Depending on how they are using their computers, this will have an effect on your internet access. Most of the time you won't notice this. When things get really busy, you will. Typically, your provider will accommodate traffic, sometimes diverting it down different routes if possible.

camclub, i think you're confusing cable with ADSL
it's the cable you share, with ADSL you always have the same speed (aprox.)
I have cable, and when my neighbours are downloading movies, things tend to go a bit slower here :p
But, hey, i'm still faster then with ADSL

Nope, I have ADSL, and I use it on a 50:1 contention rate (Hence it's shared!). I could pay a little more for a 20:1 rate, or a touch more still for a clean line!

It works through BT's regular phone switchboard. Only certain switchboards offer ADSL (Most of them now). BT are not cable providers. The ADSL comes in through my fax phone line, with a ADSL filter attached, and an ADSL modem attached to that! It says ADSL on the filter, and on the modem, and on my contract!
