AOL Users Getting Broadband

Post by El Brenty »

Here's something you may want to know:

I just got hooked up wioth broadband through a different service provider.

I can actually access my AOL using this broadband connection. It simply replaces the modem (select TCP/IP as the connection type), and works in the usual way.

The buddy list works with the Instant Messenger, I can still switch screen-names, and do everything I could do before with AOL, only 100 times faster.

One thing to remember though, if you want to keep AOL, while using someone else's connection, you're paying for both!

I think I'll scrap my AOL soon, once I've given out my new Email address - I will lose the virus-free email (attachments excluded), although I won't miss the dodgy spamming!

I was doing this for a bit when I first got cable but then I figured out that IE was much better then AOL and I just downloaded aim and I was fine. High speed, stable isp, and I just hooked up outlook to comcast, my cable peroviders, mail scervice, I haven't looked back yet.

I haven't used AOL's browser for years! I've been using IE for ages now, but through the AOL dial-up connection of course!

Yeah, but one thing for it - You didn't get all the viruses that MS outlook gets because it used it's own front-end mail software, although that sucked because you couldn't import address lists!

Man this new broadband connection is great!

Get Pegasus Mail for you rPOP3/SMTP client. There are other alternatives in the world to MS and AOL LOL.. Eudora, Pegasus come to mind as mail clients but there are probably at least a half dozen others. Just ignore outlook and outlook express...

You can still access your AOL email from other computers via their homepage. I did so for a while when I used AOL for... ooh... about a month :P

Apart from the sucky browser, it isn't that bad, it does provide a fair bit of content, and you can also rummage around for loads of free downloads.

I'm cutting mine off soon, because I don't want to pay for 2 ISPs!

Fool, you should have gone to Eclipse!

Freeserve have got bad contention rates on their lines! They also will cut you off without notice if you upload too much onto their web-space, or if you get too many people downloading files from that web-space!

ALthough you may have a 512K connection, you're sharing it with loads of other people, and at peak times you'll find it slowing down, and at worst, getting slower than analogue!

Be warned!
