Possible stunts?

Post by rhys »

Hey,
I was filming another random fight that i wont be posting on here, where Melissa threw a trampoline at me (she tipped it and it fell on me, for the sake of being mean) and i was wondering what other stunts could i achieve that are possible and not too dangerous?

I have already stood on a chair, had it on its hind legs then tipped it forward.
I have had the trampoline fall on me.
I have dodged real (but slightly blunt) samurai swords.
I have thrown myself to the ground alot.
I have jumped over my couch.
I have broken sugar glass (oh look at me, im dangerous.. grr...).

I started to get a little nick for these kinda things, and was wondering what else i could do. Later on in life i either wanna be a stunt man or actor or director. I wanna try them all out first.

If your that interested I'd get a book on stuntwork, I don't know if anyone here has enough knowledge of stuntwork to help a novice.

heres an idea

MOVE AWAY FROM YOUR DAMM BACK GARDEN

its so irritating watching your short 'fight' movies all filmed in your garden, i feel like i can draw a picture of your entire house just from memory

get out onto location, experiment, i'm sure you'll find many more death defying stunts out there

cars
trees
bus shelters
etc.

You wan't to know what to do to exceed Your Stunt abbilities?

First of all. Being a Stuntman is not an ordinary job - it's a LIFESTYLE. There is no part time job Stuntman.

- every day training of various disciplines
- martial arts + acrobatics + fencing + falls + parkour
- you need to realize the difference between a Stuntman and a Jackass

There is no such thing as stunt tricks list :)
You need to be prepared to do anything that will show up in the script.

Think before doing anything.
Your life and health are much more important than any high $ stunt.

What do You want to know?

I make movies in my backyard because its open and i can throw s*** around there, and i dont think i can exactly walk down the street with a katana. Ill go to that random brick wall one day....
I want to know just any thing that looks really dangerous thats possible for me to do. I want to do acrobatics and stuff for flips and aerials and stuff, but mum already pays a couple of hundred bucks a month on karate and knife defense and weapons.

That's is what the guys here need to understand. You need to train, you need to be fit, you need to have courage and organisational skills beyond JACKASS, you need to commit and you need to be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Pain is inseparable part of being a stuntman :-)
Remember that You have to be able to do a stunt couple of times for doubles without harming anyone (and yourself)

You wan't to learn new stunts? watch carefully action scenes and try to get something out of them.

Yes Tymek, you learn to appreciate pain. Not necessarily like it but you understand it more.

Yeah i know, pain is going to happen every once in a while but being a stunt man isn't just to go out and hurt yourself for the sake of not making the actor do it. I'm not much of a pussy when it comes to pain though, i got back kicked in the chest by a 30 year old guy at karate and i just laughed. I think facing fears is fun as hell. Trying to explain myself is really hard cos i confuse myself.
When i leave school im going to The Australian Stunt Academy and am going to do a 100 hour stunt course, its gonna set me back $3850, probably more by 2010.
I'm a little confused why you have to be fit to be a stunt person (although its not too hard with my kick a** metabolism), please explain.

You have to be fit for many reasons. One to keep up with the pace and demands. Two to be able to physically take the punishment involved. Three it also helps recovery. just a few reasons.

For one stunt I did where i was dragged behind a car for a few hundred metres at between 80-100kmph I needed to be very fit just to hang on to the rope and maintain posture.

Wouldn't that be a little dangerous? To hang onto a moving car? Did you even look into that or plan that... or... did it just kinda happen? Was it gravel?

No it was all planned with the location, pads, medical, trusted/experienced crew etc. I ended up having to do it 4 times to get the effect and then it was used for maybe a 2 second clip. My background is mostly live and stage orientated stunt work.

rhys - being a stuntman IS dangerous, although we put a lot of work in minimizing risk.
You can do most thrilling stunt - carefully planned - using your brain and expirience - and it will be quite safe. You can do a simple stunt - with no thinking - and land in hospital.

Jump off a bridge?
Play in traffic?

I don't know. But surely a stunt is pointless without a storyline? Write a script and see what the plot requires the characters to do, then do that and try not to kill yourself doing it.

I have got 1 that i did in pakour. Have someone driving a car at you, and you run at the car. With the momentum of you an the car jump and dive over it. Or you can do what i did and front flip over by luck.
