RE: Some After effects work

Nice work :) Particle Illusion in the second one? I'd be tempted to add a little bit of a flash and some illumination as it hits its target.

^ yep, what he said. You might not notice if you're not doing anything particularly intricate, but MPEG is rather lossy. If you're anything like me you'll inevitably want to go back and tweak some effects later on, and it really stings if all you have to work with is a nasty compressed copy.

Agreed. I'll up it to 15 passes in mental ray for the final render.

The cloning is done through a combination of frame-by-frame masking and bluescreen chroma-keying, to varying degrees depending on the shot.

Just a small glimpse of of the rendered CGI arm in two shots today, with the final 16:9 widescreen cropping the rest of the film will have. Now that we've got it all modelled, rigged and set up, I'm sort of kicking myself that there isn't much of it in the film. Neither of these are in their final r...

Any number of car parks with small buildings near them. With some careful angles, you could probably get away with it without having to add additional visual queues either on the day of the shoot or in post.

Nicely done. I think the thing that sells gunshots more than anything is decent acting (something which I admit to being less than stellar at), and you've got the kick right here. Loving the holes left in the wall.

Good work. I really would implore you to start using a pre-multiplied alpha format instead of a blue background, you'll get perfect edges without an additional keying job.

Often, no - you're much more at liberty to tweak your 3D rendering's colours, highlights, blur match, film grain etc in a compositing package. I'd only use the video as a reference in the 3D package, rather than exporting with the video as a background.

Create a false surface upon which to cast your shadow, then when you export make sure that only the shadow is rendered, not the surface itself, and export as something with a premultiplied alpha option such as PNG, TIF or EXR.

that's awesome. You guys are all doing 3D stuff and i'm still shooting miniatures? I personally consider miniatures to be a more refined art - one I've had no experience with, and when I come to make the third installment of this film in a few years time, something I'll definitely want to try. An u...

That's bogus and you know it! All the major animation programs have the potential to look realistic. There is no "correct" program; it is preference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Movies_made_with_help_of_3DS_Max Of course you can get extremely realistic results with Max. I've seen...

Seeing as there's no colour information there to begin with, you're going to have to add it yourself. It's not going to be a one-click thing, and I don't see any other way of doing it.

It may be too early for me on a Monday morning ... but that last post by rhys doesn't make sense to me. Re: RE: Wire Removal?

I think even large budget movies do it frame by frame (export to Photoshop filmstrip, go from there). Then you need to research a little better. Certainly not done with a Photoshop film strip. After Effects and Shake both have roto-paint options which can be animated and matchmoved with tracking da...

Might well be the reason - you should always render from AE using the renderq queue, rather than "export" which for some reason causes a load of problems.

Maya is supposed to be simpler to learn and use. Maya is definitely preferred by companies like Pixar -- for cartoons/animations. The most photorealistic outcomes seem to come from Max though. I learned 3DS and it was a pain, although it's getting a little more friendly with later versions. That's ...

Tough one. Try stabilising the footage in AE, maybe apply a median filter to iron out noise.

No guys you don't understand, 9/11 really WAS an inside job. There were people who saw FLASHES at the base of the TOWER! That means the FBI or the government planted bombs there which really made the toweres fall. You can read all about it at www.911truth.org, now if you guys don't mind I have more...
