I am a total advocate for the use of squibs, since compressed air might look good in some circumstances, butbmostly it is too blunt, too big, all these hoses and stuff and the actor cannot move freely with all that stuff attached to him. stock footage is prerecorded material. it always looks crappy when stock footage explosions are used in films. don't do it., go for the physical effect.

if you have firecrackers and after effects and a lot of time do the following. film the scene twice. once with actors and then from the same perspective, set of fircrackers beneath the soil.fire of one cracker, then put another in the ground, net to hit, set it off and put another in the ground next...
