I'd just grab a bunch of friends and have then throw pieces of jump to eachother from each end of the frame behind the character and throw in CG debris and dust over the front of the character

If you do decide to use a balloon you can stop it from bursting by sticking a small piece of masking tape or the like onto it and making the hole in the middle of the tape.

Dunno what these guys have a problem with, that menu could almost be on the DVD of a big movie!
