W/ Balsa wood, keep tweezers handy for the almost inevitable splinter incident, and equip everyone nearby with safety glasses (Really cheap at home improvement stores)

I would just try and find people who need odd jobs done. Also, home-expansion projects are a veritable hotbed of loose money, so ask arround and see if you can pull nails or package up old drywall or something

If the shot is just of a guy taking a chair across the back, use Balsa wood if possible, and have him wear a few A-shirts beneath whatever else he's wearing. W/ the chair, I would recomend cutting halfway through the legs, then create a "Crumple Zone" on the legs by cutting a wedge shape p...

for the really REALLY cheap version, simply half-burry a board in the ground (Preferably sand) and have your actor stand on the un-burried part.
