The HDR-HC3 is the more consumer of the 2. Go for the HDR-HC1. That's what I have. The HC1 has a mic out jack, (so you could get external microphones) the HC3 does not have one. I'll tell you anyway. Let's say the file name is "hdr-hc1footage1.m2t". Right click on the file, select "Rename," rename it to "hdr-hc1footage1.mpg". It will turn into a MPEG 2 file. It's that easy. No programs required.

You can use regular MiniDV tapes. But Sony made a HDV tape that is a MiniDV tape, but made better so there will be less of a chance of a dropout. It's like $15 for 1 of these.
