I've never used Lightwave, but I have 3d Studio Max 4.2 and it's really good. From what I read on this forum, 3d Studio Max seems the best.

Just film the actors doing whatever. Then film the background plate, maybe film it for awhile, then in post, change the speed to 200, and if you want add a blur. Then mask the actors, and combine them in AE.
