Nothing official has been announced by Canon, but the educated guess at the moment is August 2004 for an XL2 debut.

There is a ton of speculation here.

The XM2 gets a higher raiting than the XM1 prob because it's easier to use and smaller and lighter for the same quality. The XM1 gives you more manual control with functions such as being able to play with the appature and you can connect proper movie and TV lenses to it. As a side note, in the UK ...

Not sure what NLE you're using but if it supports Photoshop transparency that would be a better way of doing it (just have the background transparent, rather than key it out).

I would love to shoot 35mm, but I'd have to con a lot of money out of someone for the film stock and post production, which would have to include a transfer to digital so I could edit that way. I would also try and hire a professional Director of Photography, so it wasn't a complete waste of time :-)

Not much detail on the page about this camera, but I'll say this: My first MiniDV was a little 3CCD Panasonic that looked a bit like this one funnily enough. I bought it five years ago and I have knocked it around to hell and back. Aside from a little wobble on the LCD hinge it still works perfectly...

You have the benefit of knowing someone who owns one, so play around with his and see if you like it, that's probably the best way to tell if it is going to be any good, and you can always attach a cheap shotgun mike to the top to improve the sound (I'm assuming it has an accessory bracket). It's 1C...

Some use Final Cut Pro because it's a lot cheaper than high-end Avid systems, and is capable of handling film (even coordinating recutting of negatives) and fancy new HD stuff too. Steven Soderbergh did a film with FCP recently (can't remember it's name unfortunately), the film Intolerable Cruelty w...

Or me! Final Cut Express should handle everything you want to do if you're a DV/firewire based film-maker like most people here. It has most of the major features of Final Cut Pro, but is DV only (FCP can handle pretty much any format), and doesn't do any of the realtime stuff FCP does (which you pr...

The E in EMac stands for EDUKASHUN :D It's great because schools can get them even cheaper still, which means DV editing for the masses! Well you know what they say about bad workmen! :D

How is it not hand-held? It has two separate grips, which makes it twice as hand-held as regular cameras!

Door number 3!

Big-flippin-expensive 35mm film cameras with lifelike image reproduction and depth of field.

There are some articles here and other places on achieving the film look with DV, but you will never quite get as good as real 35mm. Ah well.

Sorry Tony, I haven't used one... one thing that sticks out to me is that the Elura 50 is a 3CCD camera and the Optura 20 is a 1CCD camera. The Elura has a separate CCD for Red, Green and Blue, which gives better colour depth in your picture. This may or not be important to you depending on the sort...

Which is why I pointed out that iMovie is free, whereas on a PC you would have to pay (probably more than the $25 for Quicktime Pro) for a decent editor. :)
