Define a point in movie making in general... entertainment? Killing some time? If that is your limited, childish view of filmmaking then you shouldn't be a filmmaker. Film is about communicating through people via a unique medium, creating art, making something that is culturally significant, portr...

RE: Digital effects or real effects

You're right, digital does have its place, I use it when absolutely necessary (i.e., spaceships, alien monsters, etc.) but for gore, stunts, pyrotechnics, etc., real-time effects are beautiful.

RE: Your style

Shooting wise, I like heavy contrast and cooloer colors and shoot it many times for optimum editing choices. Editing, I like to blend shots that establish environment with closeups in the way that best acquaints the audience with the character. With actors, I like to get them to be spontaneous and h...

RE: Directing

It is important that directors know writing and have a great deal of say in the writing process, so that the vision the director has for the film applies everywhere and links everything together.

In addition to helping write a script, I would also be interested in working on the musical score if you need a composer. I've got some riffs and such in my head for a pirate score.

If anyone wants to help right a script, you've always wanted to make a pirate script. Here's Your Chance.
Sounds extremely intriguing, and I would be uber-interested in helping.

Filmmaking is about a lot more than cool stunts and special effects, it's about understanding plot and character, about good visual and auditory aesthetic, and so on. These things tike time to master.

RE: Making a star wars clip

Good lighting that doesn't make the film look like it was shot in someone's dim basement. Shot from multiple angles w/ dynamic editing. Good sound, fuzz-free dialogue. If you are trying to make a serious, non-spoofy SW clip, then avoid having people make long dramatic monologues laden with Force ref...

RE: Waiting...

I used to have this problem when working with close friends as cast and crew, because they just weren't motivated and would screw around all the time, but now that they've seen finished examples of our work they've gotten much more dedicated. The problem comes when I bring other people I'm not so cl...

Most of the time the long takes seem a bit too "Look at me, I'm being clever!" unless they're done so well that you don't really notice they're long takes I agree, the long take is not inherently good and should only be used when it contributes something valuable. One excellent example ca...

RE: First Post on Should A Director do his Own Cinematograph

I agree with Kentertainment. The director is the fellow with the big vision of how the entire film should be, and if he wants to have direct control over cinematography, he ought to. I do my own cinematography but that doesn't mean other people don't help operate the camera and get it all ready, whi...

Yes, if you're new at it, definitely start with short films. Otherwise, because a feature takes so long to make and you're constantly getting better, you end up with a movie where some scenes are really good and others really aren't.

Altering the color of the light present can help. Recently I shot a scene that was supposed to take place in a bedroom with no lights on. So I turned off the bedroom lights and turned on the lights in all the surrounding rooms, as well as put a lamp in the corner. This would have normally looked ver...

RE: Idea for a Film...need feedback/ideas!

Here's another idea... Like what really happened sometimes in the first Civil War, two brothers are split to opposite sides of the war. When the confederates from Virgina enter West Virginia, the brother on the US side is sent into the confederate camp to steal plans or something. After successfully...

RE: EXPERIMENTAL Script Idea for School....

First of all, anything involving a mentally ill individual must be handled realistically and tactfully. But anyway, perhaps during the initial part of the film, the experimental part is frenzied and fragmented, and suggests characters attempting to do harmful things. But then the film moves away fro...

RE: Breakaway Chair

I've heard good things about balsa wood for this type of thing, but don't know from experience. Cardboard might be good if it was enforced enough so it didn't bend and crease on impact. If so, then you'd cut the pieces up beforehand and glue them back together in the shape of a chair, probably paint...

bit shaky, maybe get a tripod for some of the shots... I've seen more shakiness from some other films on here (and from some primetime TV dramas). The handheld-ness in many spots was more a stylistic choice to make the video feel more spontaneous. It did get winder than I anticipated, but still...

This link is to a site with a video my friend and I made for an online contest for high school German students. It won first place. I have done some MIDI scoring already, some of which I am pleased with, esp. anything involving organs or more electronically oriented sounds. But in this specific case, yes, I have tried MIDI, but I could not get the sound I wanted. Then again, my tools might not be the greatest. I guess I need to ...

Do any of you composers...

Do any of you composers out there use actual stringed instruments--not guitar, but violin, cello, etc.--in your recordings? How about brass? It seems that everyone uses synthesizers/MIDI, but in my experience that is so limiting. For the score I'm working on I really need a driving, percussive strin...

Apparently believing that people should be able to own guns to defend themselves and their families is equivalent to loving war...but, yes, touchy subject...

Then again, nothing wrong with a violence-free film.
