Re: act, but dont act like your acting
It's not all verbal, you have to think outside the box and find ways to put the actor(s) in a similar situation. For example, say your character is annoyed in a scene and you know your actor can't stand the sound of a clicking pen. Keep clicking the pen up until calling "action" to allow t...

My Filmmaking Blog
Hey everyone,
I have a blog for all my filmmaking adventures. Right now I'm in the middle of pre-production for a short film I'll be shooting on the Red One in August and writing stages for my first feature film.
Have a look.

The only thing you're going to get today that isn't miniDV and you can actually own is a really old 8mm camera (with expensive film and harder to find), a poor quality Hi8 off ebay, or a high-end HD camera that uses a P2 card. Under your circumstances, I'd go with miniDV, but I'd look for something ...

It does take some decent low-light images, but that was with the f-stop wide open pretty much the whole time. It's obviously better though to light as much as you can when making a movie. This was just a bored evening project though and I can't really light an entire city. I've always had an interes...

City Lights -- New Short Film
So last night I was planning on doing ADR with an actor in What's Wrong With You?! but he never showed up. I checked out some equipment (like a DVX and boom mic) so we could do it, but since he never showed I didn't want to put it to waste. The result: My friend and I on a night drive through downto...

Clarence is about spot on. It was filmed in 16:9 letterbox and then I set my editing timeline to 24p widescreen which then stretched the video preview out (not the video) and gave me my footage completely surrounded in black on all 4 sides. So I cropped out the upper and lower black bars and in doin...

I got a picture of a $100 (like the one way above) and brought it in photoshop to get it to size with a real dollar and then I just printed it off of windows picture preview and it worked. I got a warning from Photoshop when I tried to print it off of there. Although, you might want to print in real...

Re: RE: sundance short film
Has anybody here ever tried to enter a film in sundance? I went to the festival last year and plan on going again this year, although, I have considered entering. A lot of the stories I hear about the short filmmakers is they really don't think they'll get in but they enter anyways and manage to ge...

RE: sundance short film
As long as you have enough footage to where the judges can view the film and piece together what is going on you should be fine. A lot of films people send to Sundance are sent as rough cuts and then they work on a final cut. Sometimes people don't get the final exhibition copy finished with editing...

I don't know why but color grading to me is both fun and annoying. I never know when I'm satisfied with the outcome.

Nerds. If you're truely getting interested in being a cinematographer, I highly recommend this book, it's amazing. http://www.filmtools.com/anwilcinwor4.html 21 different cinematographers work through this ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) workshop and explain just about everything they're...

Moby = Free music?
So I was reading Filmmaker Magazine last night when I came across an article about Moby and how he composed music specifically for Independent Filmmakers. It's pretty easy, go here: http://www.mobygratis.com/film-music.html and then make an account (takes like 5 seconds) and you are free to anything...

I probably would have been amused about 3 months ago but the idea has been done. At least in Utah that is. I am in an apprenticeship for a place here called Spy Hop Productions and they have a program where about 12 kids take a year to write, film, and complete 2 narrative films and 2 documentaries....

No Sony Vegas users? I am here to save the day! I use Vegas 7.0 for my home use (which is mostly) and Final Cut Pro at my intern thing. I also know how to use Adobe Premiere and with my experience, it is the worst I have used. Vegas is extremely user friendly and I like that a lot and since i...

RE: PAUSE - A short film
I gave it a watch and I dig the pause effects. Care to elaborate on how you did the one where the character is in the foreground and the other is moving in the background? I liked how he moved the trampoline underneath the sister, that was pretty good. The music was great, it matched perfectly. My o...
